PROJECT OVERVIEW
Gulder Ultimate Search returned to television after a seven-year hiatus, reigniting the excitement of its audience with Season 12. The season, airing from October 16 to December 19, 2021, needed a compelling backstory video that set the stage for the adventure and mystery that would unfold. The backstory was vital for engaging viewers and building anticipation. As a core part of the production team, I contributed as the motion designer, video editor, and sound effects designer, handling all video-related aspects, excluding some elements. Additionally, I played an active role in the photoshoot process.

OBJECTIVE
The goal was to create a gripping backstory that not only engaged the audience but also embodied the essence of craftsmanship, drawing on the character of Akolo, the craftsman. This backstory set the tone for the entire season, immersing viewers in the mythos of the show and motivating them to join the search along with the contestants.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Motion Design: I designed dynamic visuals to bring the story to life, integrating the video footage, stock videos, and stills with animated graphics. The motion design highlighted the themes of craftsmanship, mystery and the hero’s journey.
Video Editing: I was responsible for the entire editing process, from initial cuts to the final output. This included syncing the story with the pace of the narrative, ensuring smooth transitions, and maintaining a rhythm that kept the viewer’s attention.
Sound Effects (SFX) Design: Sound played a crucial role in evoking emotion and adding tension to the video. I worked to create a soundscape that complemented the visuals, from atmospheric sounds during the village scenes to the more intense effects during battle sequences.
Photoshoot Involvement: During the photoshoot, I assisted in setting up shots and providing input on angles and framing to ensure the images fit seamlessly into the final video
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
Integrating Stock Footage Seamlessly: Since we were using both original photos and stock clips, one of the biggest challenges was making the two feel have a cohesive look. This was achieved through careful color grading and dynamic motion design that bridged the gap between the footage types.
Pacing the Story: The backstory had to balance exposition with action. I used fast cuts during the more intense moments and slow transitions during reflective scenes, ensuring the pacing kept the viewer engaged while still allowing for the development of the story.
RESULTS
The backstory video successfully set the stage for the season and captured the attention of viewers. It established the thematic elements of craftsmanship, mystery, and adventure, drawing audiences into the world of Gulder Ultimate Search. The video received positive feedback for its engaging narrative and dynamic visuals.
